A free program for women who have recently completed treatment for breast cancer
The Wellness Community of East Tennessee in collaboration with the UT Cancer Institute will be offering a free program designed for women who have recently completed treatment for breast cancer. Return to Wellness (RTW) is a new program that integrates educational workshops, support group discussion, strength training and yoga. It is designed to help women recover from the emotional and physical effects of breast cancer treatment.
The Return to Wellness program is available to all breast cancer patients who are at least 3 weeks, but not more than 24 months post-treatment, with no evidence of active cancer and with their physician’s approval. Dr. Susan Huntsinger, one of the presenting physicians from UT Cancer Institute says, “Women who have undergone treatments for breast cancer often report side effects such as weight gain, fatigue and emotional distress post-treatment. Return to Wellness provides a structure to address all of these issues and help women get back to optimal health. ”
The program will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for 2 hours each session. Classes will start September 14th at 5:30pm and will be held in the UT Rehabilitation Services located at UT Medical Center, 1932 Alcoa Hwy. The program will include one hour of exercise and 1 hour of education or support group. Professional fitness instructors, facilitators, educators or physicians will staff all classes. The classes are limited to 15 participants per 10-week session.
“Breast Cancer survivors coming together as a group have been shown to have a positive impact on their motivation to continue exercising and addressing psychological issues that may develop after treatment” said Dr. Debra Sullivan, Program Director of The Wellness Community of East Tennessee. “By taking an active role in their treatment and recovery, patients can improve the quality of their lives.”
The Return to Wellness program in Knoxville is part of a nationwide program sponsored by The Wellness Community and underwritten by Aventis Oncology to give women a new beginning after breast cancer treatment.
