For the first game of the season those diehard University of Tennessee Football fans that remember the games from the past will get a little treat. The players will be decked out in retro gear from the 1970s, complete with leg stripings and lace ups. The team will be wearing the retro jerseys for the season opener at Neyland Stadium for the UNLV game Sept. 5. White jerseys are a rare sight to see on Vol players since the team first unveiled orange jerseys on Sept. 23, 1922.
UT athletics director Mike Hamilton said during a press conference on July 26, Tennessee’s road uniform “Is one of the teams most unique uniforms.” According to Hamilton, “The one uniform that stood out in uniqueness, was the road uniform we wore in the early 1970s. We’ve decided for one game only, we will wear our road whites and we’ve asked UNLV to wear red. I want to thank Adidas for working with us on this project.” Hamilton also stated that merchandising is in the works and that new Vol retro merchandise should be available by mid August.
Players seemed pleased with the retro styled jerseys. Punter Dustin Colquitt stated, “I like the change. I really like these uniforms. If I had the choice I’d wear these pants all year.”
Wide receiver Tony Brown talked about how vintage jerseys are becoming popular with people. “There is a new company that started two years ago selling reproductions of vintage jerseys and they are doing great. People like them.”
Former quarterback Condredge Holloway was on hand with his vintage jersey. “When we played we took pride in anything we wore. We were more worried about playing the opposing team than the jerseys.”
Hamilton said the season opener begins the process of having “family reunions” for different sports, beginning with football in 2004. According to Hamilton all former UT football lettermen have been invited to the UNLV game for a reunion and will be recognized during halftime. “We’re happy to report that between 375 to 400 former football lettermen will be a part of this weekend, stated Hamilton. “The lettermen will be invited to the team’s final walk-through Saturday afternoon, then have individual team dinners on Saturday night, then participate in Vol Walk to the stadium on Sunday with this year’s team. It will be a great opportunity for the fans to say thank you for what their contribution has been to Tennessee football history.”
Up until 1971, Tennessee wore white shirts on the road only out of necessity. You went to a road game and the Vols were there decked out in orange.
No word yet on what the cheerleaders may be wearing.
