“Someday I am going to write a book.” This familiar statement is often made by would-be writers. Although few actually do anything toward accomplishing such a goal, members of a group in Seymour are realizing successes as writers.
‘Heart of the Valley Writers Guild’ provides a forum for writers with any level of experience and ambition. Now in its third year, the membership includes those already published and others who hope to see their work in print. A flexible agenda for each meeting provides individuals the opportunity to read selections from their works in progress and seek response. Feedback is freely given in a spirit of sincere support. With members sharing experiences, each learns from others. For example, in one meeting the topic of discussion covered copyright laws, including how to convey first and second rights. Other meetings have focused upon ways of getting published, the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing, how to write and sell a column, scams to avoid, and whether an agent is necessary.
The goal of most writers is to see his or her work in print. There is a special kind of excitement in knowing that others are reading, and hopefully enjoying, your finished product. Unfortunately, many excellent manuscripts are never made public because the author thinks the work is not good enough or does not know how to get it published.
However, getting published is a difficulty encountered by many with completed manuscripts. Writers groups serve to encourage members to write and to find methods of getting their work into print. The local guild helps in the process. By learning how others have succeeded, determined novices may be prompted to uncover ways to present their work to the public.
The roster of those regularly attending presents a diverse group with individual successes in writing. From start of the process to established author, all levels of proficiency are represented. Dormant writing skills have been awakened and polished by members dedicated to the improvement of their craft. The wide range of talent represented provides cohesiveness for the guild.
People who enjoy writing derive pleasure from talking with others about the process. ‘Heart of the Valley Writers Guild’ provides a casual setting for those desiring to share experiences and to fulfill their writing ambitions. Everyone has a story to tell, but putting it on paper is the challenge. Just getting started by actually writing a few words can be an accomplishment. Some effective writers use the technique of imagining talking to a friend as the story unfolds
‘Heart of the Valley Writers Guild’ recently moved to the new Seymour Branch of the Sevier County Public Library System on West Macon Lane.
Those who would like to share their writing experiences as well as learn from fellow members are invited to attend. The group meets the second Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Addition information is available from Lynn H. Davis at 573-6762 or Bill Justice at 577-7130.
The dream to “someday write a book” can become a reality with proper effort.
