Big Daddy to headline 16th annual show
Bristol Dragway’s most popular summer event, the AutoZone Super Chevy Show, makes its return June 25-27 for three big days of action-packed fun. An appearance by drag racing legend “Big Daddy” Don Garlits promises to be one of many weekend highlights.
Garlits, driver of the famed “Swamp Rat” and king of dragster racing, accumulated 144 national event titles and 17 NHRA and IHRA championships during a career that spanned four decades. He will make a personal appearance in Thunder Valley where he’ll serve as commentator for ESPN2’s coverage of the Super Chevy Show’s drag racing and car show. Garlits also will pose for pictures with fans and sign autographs throughout the weekend.
Also appearing on the weekend card are the powerful Nitro Coupes, one of the Super Chevy Show’s biggest draws. These supercharged rides, which burn nitro methane fuel, cover the quarter-mile in just over six seconds at more than 230-mph. Another fan favorite will be the famed Jet Dragsters, Cannonball Express and Super Chief. These 13,000 horsepower jet engines need 26 gallons of jet fuel for each quarter-mile pass but it’s worth it as they rocket down the strip at speeds pushing 300 mph.
Airborne Express, a Chevy Astro van with a 1,200 horsepower blown alcohol motor, will bring the crowd to its feet as the Wheelstander performs impressive runs on its back wheels only. Super Chief, Cannonball Express and Airborne Express will run at noon and 4:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
The TREMEC Transmissions Car Show, which features awards for more than 30 categories, will take place on Saturday and Sunday. A swap meet and car corral also help make up the spectacular weekend show.
Gates open at 10 a.m. on Friday, 7 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults on Friday and $22 on Saturday and on Sunday. A weekend ticket is $32. Junior tickets for ages 11 to 15 are $10 a day and a weekend pass is $15. Children 10 and under enter free with a paying adult.
