Smoky Mountain University Hikeathon a success
The Smoky Mountain University Hikeathon, a semi-annual event sponsored by the tongue-in-cheek institution of higher learning, has once again left footprints around the Smoky Mountains.
All proceeds from the hike were given to the Friends of the Smokies, and over $1500 was presented for use as needed for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Over 110 hikers locally and from 6 neighboring states participated.
Groups from Celebrations Church in Seymour, Our Savior Lutheran Church of Gatlinburg, and Sevierville Primary School of Sevierville, and the Welcome Centers of Gatlinburg along with families, couples and individuals joined together to spend a day in the “campus” of Smoky Mountain University for a good cause.
John and Kat LaFevre, authors of the Scavenger Hike Adventures book lead a featured hike to Alum Cave Bluffs that was enjoyed by nearly 25 hikers.
Other hike trails visited by the Hikeathon participants include The Jumpoff, Grotto Falls, Ramsey Cascades and more.
It was a wonderful day that was ended by enjoying a free barbeque dinner at the Bennetts Pit BBQ in Gatlinburg, for all who had donated through their registration.
The Lutheran organization Thrivent provided a large grant for the Lutheran Churches in the area to be able to hike through an event they sponsor called Join Hands Day.
