The office of Senator Lamar Alexander released a statement on Memorial Day to commemorate the passing of those servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for our country.
“Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country,” Alexander said.
“Throughout American history, brave men and women have answered the call to duty and sacrificed to protect the people and ideals of our United States.
“On May 5, 1868 Gen. John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic designated a day “for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land,” Alexander said.
“During this first celebration of “Decoration Day” in 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery, Gen. James Garfield made a speech, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery. Today, we honor this tradition at Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave.
“As this nation devotes a day to commemorate the sacrifices of our soldiers in all of America’s wars, we should also be mindful of those Tennesseans and Americans from across the country presently protecting us, our way of life and our freedom,” Alexander said.
”Thousands of Tennesseans are serving in the battle against terrorism – men and women in active duty, as well as those in the National Guard and in the reserves. They are protecting us from a looming threat, and we will be forever grateful to them. I continue to stand behind them and to support giving them all the tools they need to get the job done.
“Our resilience and resourcefulness in Tennessee are shining examples of what is great about this nation,” Alexander said.
“This Memorial Day, as we pay tribute to our veterans and fallen soldiers, I encourage all of us to try to show as much respect and honor to these great volunteers as they have shown to our country. I also hope we will stop for a moment and remember what it means to be an American so that we can pass that on to our children and so they can continue and strengthen the character of our great nation.”
