The Iraqi prisoner abuse fiasco is the last straw for Donald Rumsfeld. The sooner he resigns the sooner the Bush administration can put this embarrassment behind them. The president cannot afford the media dragging this story out any longer, especially in an election year. And poor Dick Cheney. I wonder what he was thinking (or drinking) when he claimed Rumsfeld is “ the greatest Secretary of Defense in the history of our country.” Absolutely unbelievable!
This is not the first time Rumsfeld has caused problems for Bush. It has been well documented that he and Colin Powell have been at odds since the cabinet was formed. Unfortunately for Bush, he chose to listen to Rumsfeld instead of Powell during the build up to the Iraq war. The ugly situation at Abu Ghraib in Baghdad has already threatened to undermine our mission in Iraq. Our country continues to lose respect from other nations, especially those that are predominantly Muslim. The Bush White House has been desperately trying to control the damage since the abuse story broke, but everything they do is like putting gas on a fire.
Since Rumsfeld is the head of the military it seems the buck should stop with him. His lack of leadership has caused a breakdown in discipline at several levels, and he needs to take responsibility. Right-wing radio hosts have , of course, have come to his defense, saying he didn’t know this and wasn’t told that. And we all know that’s a crock. Talk show hosts have rallied around him because King George has stated Rumsfeld has his full support.
One thing that is so troubling about the prsoner abuse is Rumsfeld knew for quite some time that reports of mistreatment were being made, and he chose not to publicize them. The damaging photographs released recently did not just suddenly appear. If he had brought everything to light when it happened, there might not have been the intense media crush that has descended upon him.
