John Byers returned to 411 Motor speedway for the first time this season and dominated the Modified Mini Feature on Saturday night. Byers won his heat race and started at the back of the field, but wasted no time getting to the front of the pack. Bill Lytle had one of his best races of the year, taking an early lead, but had his mirror full of Cindy Poore in her #T6 Mustang. Poore tried to get around Lytle to no avail, opening the door for Byers who went to the inside and took the lead. When Byers made his move, he opened up a big lead, leaving the race for second between Poore, Lytle and Steve Owens Jr.
Mid way through the race, Darren Meyers spun his Mustang and closed up the field for the end of the race. Byers car was too strong for the rest of the field and he went on to win his first race at 411, on his first visit of the year. Steve Owens Jr. got around Poore with three laps remaining, but ran out of time for the challenge on the leader. Poore finished in third with Lytle in the fourth spot.
The Modified Street division also saw a first time winner as Jerry “Fireball” Roberts took his Camaro to the front during the heat race and then again in the feature. Robert’s biggest challenge came from two time winner, Phillip Derosia, who took the early lead, but Roberts got around him just before mid race. Once Roberts got the lead, Derosia didn’t give up as he tried different lines on the race track, trying to find the quick way around. Derosia went high in turn three, trying to get momentum in the turn and came out of turn four too high, brushing the wall and ending the night for his bright green Dodge.
The Classic Cars were not to be outdone as they had a great race between Michael “Frogge” Ingle and last weeks winner, Charlie Dunlap. Ingle had the lead, but Dunlap tried several times to get around the RSC sponsored car. Ingle stayed out front until he entered the final lap in turn one, when he suddenly lost power and dove to the inside of the track. Dunlap was right on his back bumper and had to turn into the infield with Ingle to avoid hitting the back of his car. That gave the win to Jason Thomas, who was as surprised as anyone in victory lane.
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw both cars go into the infield.” Thomas said. “But I stayed on the gas until I saw the checkered flag.”
It was Thomas’ first win at the track and the first of his career. Ingle finished in second and Dunlap third with Jim Thomas rounding out the top four.
The Mini Chargers saw Lynn Doane take another win in his Nissan, but had to work for the top spot with Jake Ginter trying to get around the flying black machine. He didn’t take long to get to the front and followed Ginter for three laps, before he got around him on the back straight. Ginter never gave up and even got alongside once, but Done’s car was too strong and he took the win. Ginter took second with Kathy James bringing her little Chevy home in third.
