Dott Baker Agency
celebrates 50 years
in business
To be in business for half a century, somebody must be doing something right.
The people at the Dott Baker Agency have been doing all the right things since 1954, providing multi-lines of insurance and quality homes to residents throughout the south Knoxville area and beyond – all with the personal touch that was characteristic of its founder.
They have amassed thousands of satisfied clients, and they’re showed their appreciation to the folks who have contributed to the agency’s success with a special “Customer Appreciation Day” on Saturday, May 22, in the open field behind their location at 6334 Chapman Highway in Knoxville.
“It’s our 50-year celebration and a time to thank our customers for their business down through the years,” said Butch Inman, grandson of the founder and owner of the insurance side of the business.
“We’ve been in the insurance business for 50 years and real estate for 48, so we’ve got a lot of great clients.”
At the “Customer Appreciation Day” there was be something for everyone – a 22-foot giant slide, the Burger King Whopper Hopper Moonwalk, pony rides, a petting zoo, all kinds of refreshments, and a bluegrass band. The festivities were scheduled from noon to 3 p.m.
Dott Baker, now 85 and still semi-active in the agency, founded the organization as an insurance business in July of 1954 at a location not far from where the agency operates today. He added the real estate agency in 1956 and affiliated with Century 21 in 1978.
A long-time member of Knoxville’s Metropolitan Planning Commission, Baker helped in the development and sale of several Knox subdivisions, including Hinkle Estates, Crossfield, and Grandview.
In 1987 Baker sold the real estate agency to his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Mark Inman, Butch Inman’s parents. Mark is now retired and Suzanne is “semi-retired,” according to Butch Inman. Donnie and Jill Day purchased the real estate agency in July of 2002, and the agency employs a total of 17 realtors.
Butch Inman purchased the insurance agency in January of 2002 and added Blue Cross-Blue Shield as one of its health insurance companies. Originally, Dott Baker affiliated with Safeco Insurance in the early 1970’s, writing small business and personal lines of insurance, and the agency continues to write its policies today. They also represent other companies. Butch, his grandfather, and Teri Huskey handle the insurance sales and service.
“We have over 1,000 insurance clients,” Inman said.
