A crowd of approximately 5000 baseball fans watched at Smokies Park as the Tennessee Smokies fell to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx 9-2 in a home game Friday, May 21.
It was the Smokies’ last home game until May 31, as they now start an 8-game road stretch. The Smokies head to Carolina following the defeat for a Saturday night game with the Mudcats.
The home team’s bats were mostly cooled by the Jaxx pitching staff, led by starter Sean Marshall, which allowed only two runs on five hits.
The Smokies trailed 0-2 when in the bottom of the sixth Corey Erickson sent a two-run blast out of the park to even the score.
West Tenn. took the initiative in the top of the following frame, however, scoring seven runs to bring the total to a final 9-2 mark.
The loss caused the Smokies to tumble to a 22-20 record in the Southern League standings and put West Tenn at a 23-18 record in the league. The Smokies still retain a 13-6 home mark for the season despite the Friday night loss.
