Brad Thompson finished one out shy of a complete game shutout Wednesday afternoon as Tennessee (10-10) turned back Montgomery 2-0 in front of 6,281 in a game that began at 10:40 a.m. It was the second straight shutout for Thompson, who held Huntsville scoreless in a 5-0 win Friday night.
Thompson (3-0) ran his scoreless streak to 22 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out a season high eight for Tennessee’s first win at Riverwalk Stadium. The right-hander allowed a pair of second inning singles before retiring the next 21 batters. He left the game after allowing a 2-out 2-strike single to Jesus Feliciano in the ninth. Evan Rust followed and needed just one pitch to record his second save.
Dan Moylan stroked a fourth inning single and moved to third on Javier Colina’s double against Biscuits starter Jarod Matthews (1-2). Jon Hamilton drove both home with a single to left, putting the Smokies ahead 2-0 in the fourth.
Montgomery (7-13) never threatened, managing just two hits in the second inning and hitting into a double play to end the frame.
