King’s Academy was passing to the middle and shooting from the interior of the soccer field, but only managed to get one of their twenty-nine shots to fall against Gatlinburg-Pittman last Tuesday night at Hammonds Field. The Highlanders took the 4-1 win while being outshot two-to-one.
G-P (3-1-1) netted two goals in each half in defeating the under-manned Lions (3-3). Lugi Recarte set up the first goal for the blue and gold with seven minutes gone, using his speed to push the ball down the field. Recarte dinked the ball over to Rollie File who footed it past TKA goalie Andy Scalf.
Seven minutes later Highlander Scott Simpson whipped one in unassisted. G-P weathered some close calls from TKA. A direct penalty late in the first went low and rebounded off the stomachs of the jumping Highlander defender wall. Eco Back twice had shots slide just to the outer edge and Valentin Uwayo had a line drive robbed by G-P goalie John Miley. The 2-0 lead held up to intermission.
G-P struck quickly in the second. Jordan Jones blooped a shot over Scalf just ninety seconds into the half. The soft shot dinked up and over the goalie before rolling into the back of the net. Jesse Ndurumo answered for TKA, taking an assist from Uwayo and getting the shot to rocket past Miley to close the gap to 3-1.
Lions Coach Paul Mobley urged his team to connect on their shots in the final twenty minutes, but they went wide or found Miley. Tempers flared just a bit, with G-P’s Jonathan Brennan getting a yellow card after discussing a pushing call with the official. Joomin was on the receiving end of the push but the penalty kick went high, splitting the football uprights but did not count for any points. Moments later Joomin got his own yellow card for play on Brennan. The Lions two player bench during the contest didn’t allow for many breathers for the team.
G-P tacked on an insurance goal late in the second. Brian Burns took the ball close inside to the left and drew out the goalie before Recarte swooped in close through the defense and scored on the now open right side side of the goal.
