First year Seymour soccer coach Mick Williams can see the silver lining in his team’s 3-0 loss to the Webb Spartans Monday night.
Williams feels that losing to the Division II powerhouse Spartans, although still a loss, will help prepare the Eagles for the important district tilts that lay on the horizon. He saw his team show guts on defense and battle the talented private school club for every free ball.
“When you consider the level of competition, I think we did alright,” said Williams after the game. “They are a very good Division II team and I thought we showed some heart out there tonight, especially our defenders.
Williams singled out left midfielder Chris O’Connor as one of his players that stood out with his play and credited defenders Shane Pollard, Jay Elliott, Blake Gibson and Omar Lopez for holding the Spartans to just three goals, one coming on a penalty kick.
Webb (2-0) had 21 shots on goal compared to 16 for the Eagles (1-2).
The Spartans scored their first goal with less than five minutes gone from the first half clock. They scored their second on a penalty kick with just over 23 minutes to go in the game and their final score came with just over 2:00 left.
Seymour keeper Eric Humes recorded 18 saves on the night.
SHS plays against Austin-East to close the week on Thursday and faces Union County on Monday.
