The Herald is pleased to announce the winner in the 2004 Shamrock Spotter contest. Taking home the prize is Andrew Homberg, 18, of Sevierville.
“I get the Herald at the post office in Sevierville, and the contest caught my eye,” said Homberg, who is a senior at Sevier County High School. “This will help me when it comes time to rent a tux for the prom.”
“I like the Herald because it gives more local news than the other papers,” he continued.
“We at The Herald want to congratulate Andrew on his win, and thank everyone who entered for sending in their guesses,” said Joe Karl, Publisher of The Herald Newspapers.
Holmberg sent in the winning entry via email well before the deadline. His count of twenty-five shamrocks was the closest to the actual number, which was twenty-seven.
“It was a close thing,” said David Grimes, Managing Editor of The Herald Newspapers. “We worked very hard to conceal those shamrocks, and Andrew very nearly found them all.”
The Herald staff in charge of the contest were particularly tricky in hiding the four-leaf symbols. One person who brought their entry by The Herald offices Friday stated “I must have looked straight at the one that was hidden in the computer screen for five minutes before I finally saw it.”
By virtue of his winning estimate, Holmberg has won a fifty dollar prize and a 52-week subscription to the Smoky Mountain Herald.
The contest, the first of its kind offered by The Herald, was well received, with entrants sending in their guesses via fax, email, and even delivering them by hand.
“We hope to have many more of this type of contest,” Grimes noted. “It helps us thank our readers and subscribers for the support they give to us each day.”
“It is our wish that we could award a prize to every entrant,” said Karl. “However, due to the tremendous response, we are unable to allocate the space necessary to include everyone’s name and photo.”
