The Seymour Middle School golf team will kick off its season March 4 when it tees off against Caton’s Chapel. The team has fifteen dates on its calendar this season for Jeffrey Giles, Andrew Ramsey, Derrick Rickels, Spencer Rudder and Tyler Sharp. The team played its way out of district and into regionals last season with Ramsey and Rudder playing for individual medals at state.
All of this year’s team are seventh graders, who are favored to repeat as district champions. The group made a strong showing at region and returns much of its talent with another year’s experience under their swing.
The team is not a recognized athletic program at the middle school level. The team falls into a club status and must raise its own funding as they do not receive school funding or staffing. Parents and volunteers provide 100% of the support for the equipment, matches and tournament expenses.
In an effort to raise some funds for the season and a hoped for trip to the state tournament at Three Ridges the boosters are putting on the EGT Masters Benefit Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held at the tam’s home course of Creek Side in Seymour, which last spring hosted the girl’s state middle school tournament. Thirty foursomes will mix it up in a double shotgun start on March 20.
