Two things have caught my attention this week, and I suppose that both are related in a distant sort of way.
First has to do with the statements of the Formula One owners that concern NASCAR racing. The owners have decided that NASCAR is a phenomenon that they can’t understand. One owner went as far to say he doesn’t understand the attraction, and that Formula One has a better show, but doesn’t have anywhere near the following. Several of the owners and the officials for Formula One are going to visit some of the NASCAR races this year and see what they can do to match the enthusiasm that NASCAR enjoys.
It wouldn’t take me long to explain to these owners what the problem is with Formula One racing. I know that many Americans haven’t seen a Formula One race, either here in the United States or overseas. The drivers are virtually unknown in this country and can enjoy a walk through any Wal Mart parking lot if they wish, without anyone bothering them. In Europe it’s different, they not only have all the fame they need, they act like they have all the fame they want. Formula drivers are unapproachable, not only to fans, but also on the track.
Nine of the sixteen races last season were won by the pole sitter. If they get close enough to touch wheels, the “number one” sign comes out and then they develop a rule to stop someone from getting that close again. Watching Formula One is like watching grass turn green.
The other problem they have is team orders, one car will pull over for another, and I guess that’s my segway for the other controversy this week.
At Rockingham, Mark Martin was accused of blocking for his teammate, Matt Kenseth. Whether you agree with this or not, doesn’t matter. There is no room in NASCAR racing for team orders. I’m sure that there may be some feelings from drivers that drivers will do things for their teammates, but if it ever comes to one moving over for the other, or they really block so someone can win, it will be the day that the sport is ruined. I hope that the owners of the Cup teams don’t go to Europe and try to figure out what makes Formula One racing so popular over there, they will find out that the European people like to take naps during the race, and that kind of racing provides that venue for them.
Till next time, keep turning left.
