Paul Summers, the Attorney General of the State of Tennessee, recently announced a grant award of $1,122,834 for a Statewide Tennessee Women’s Health Initiative.  The three-year grant will be administered through the National Consortium of Breast Centers, Inc. and will fund five initiatives targeting detection and prevention programs for breast and cervical cancer in the state. The UT Cancer Institute was involved in the development of the grant proposal and was selected to coordinate the program for the East Tennessee and Northeast Tennessee regions. Funds were made available through a nationwide settlement of an anti-trust suit with Mylan Pharmaceuticals.
The other three regions receiving funding are the Mid Tennessee East area that includes the Upper Cumberland and Southeast Tennessee, the Mid Tennessee West area including the Mid-Cumberland and South Central Tennessee, and the West Tennessee area.
The East Tennessee and Northeast Tennessee region will receive approximately $290,000 to carry out the initiatives of the grant. “The Cancer Institute’s breast health programs have a well-established record of providing breast care services to rural areas in our region.  This grant will certainly help reach even more women in East Tennessee,” John L. Bell, MD, UT Cancer Institute Director, said.
