Lady Vol fans won their fourth consecutive Bleed Orange Competition against
Vanderbilt Commodore fans last week with 978 pints of blood donations for
Medic Regional Blood Center.
Volunteer fans beat Vandy fans by 445 pints. Vandy donated 533 pints ofblood to the Nashville-area Red Cross.
“Our Lady Vol blood donor fans remain undefeated in this spirited cause,”said Mike Prowell, Medic_s associate director. “Of course, there are no losers in this good-natured competition. The real winners are the folks who have blood readily available when it is needed.”
The annual blood drive pitting Lady Vol fans against those of the women Commodores is co-sponsored by Medic and the Nashville-area American Red Cross. Medic serves 28 hospitals throughout 21 East Tennessee counties plus Bell County, Ky.
From Monday through Friday, Feb. 9-13, all blood donations given at seven University of Tennessee campus locations, plus the Medic center at 1601Ailor Ave., counted for the Lady Vols.
“This was a fantastic way to bring together collegiate athletics and fans for a fun-filled event that also saves lives every day,” Prowell said.
This event was extremely important since February, usually the worst weather month of the year, heavily impacts blood donations. It gave college students and other sports fans a chance to help sustain the blood bank and avoid critical shortages. In addition to the competitive fun, this drive literally sees Medic and the Red Cross through potentially critical blood-supply shortages,” he said.
All donors who participated in the Bleed Orange Competition received special
Bleed Orange T-shirts promoting the event and coupons for free Chick-Fil-Asandwiches. Chick-Fil-A also was a sponsor of the event.
