It’s been fifteen years since Cheryl Thompson opened her jewelry business, “Something Precious Fine Jewelry” with her now late husband Ruble, located in south Knoxville just a stone’s throw away from Seymour and Sevier County in the Chapman Plaza on Chapman Hwy.
Originally the business opened in Kingsport, TN in February of 1989. Thompson moved the business to south Knoxville in 2001. “I still have customers that will drive from Kingsport to see me and do business here,” stated Thompson. Her business has continued to grow, with a 19% increase in 2003.
Recently a new staff member, Cindy Kakouris joined the enterprise as Sales Manager, and with the new addition, the shop which originally was closed on Sundays and Mondays is now open six days a week, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
“We’ve had a lot of changes over the years,” stated Thompson. “Our new website is now up and running at www.somethingpreciousjewelry.com, and we are now offering a great finance program which includes 90 days same as cash.”
Alongside Thompson will you find her son, Kendrick, a gifted jewelry maker working on special pieces to add to the assortment of items to sell. Custom designs are their specialty. Kendrick prefers to work with 24-karat pure gold, alloy it to 1-8 or 14-karat and mill it to its own specifications. Each piece he designs is thought out in advance and put together by a master working his craft.
Cheryl is picky about the types of stones they use in their designs, and has made it a habit to travel to Brazil and other areas looking for just the right stones.
During her fifteenth anniversary celebration the store is full of great sales to commemorate the event. From wedding bands to watches to simple pearl rings to the most elegant designs, there is something for everyone at Something Precious Fine Jewelry.
“I love what I do,” stated Cheryl. “It’s a lot of work sometimes, but working with people is something that makes me happy.” You will always see a smile on her face when you stop in to shop. Across from the new Wal-Mart location, Something Precious Fine Jewelry is definitely worth a trip, if for nothing else to see all the glittering jewels and to meet someone who is truly a good business entrepreneur and person.
