The second district seat held by Commissioner Riley King will be one of the two commission seats involved with special elections in 2004. Phillip King was appointed by the commission to fill his father’s seat until the election could be held. Appointing family members to fill these vacancies has been common in such circumstances for years.
Commissioner Phil King will be the favorite to win the seat but has opposition in the Republican primary for the 2nd district seat. Anthony Breeden and David Trentham have both turned in applications to oppose King in the primary election that will be held in conjunction with the Presidential Primary.
King was sworn into the seat in October. The major votes taken so far have given the challengers little room to pick. King voted in favor of the purchase of the Magnetic Ideas Building and in favor of realigning the Beer Board membership. He voted against the Beer Board’s recommendation to strip out the language that the county attorney had told them was unenforceable under state law.
Campaign signs are already beginning to appear for the February election.
