Nov. 12 – Hundreds of people in Sevierville will be looking for work before or right after the holidays.
Monday, November 10, 416 people found out they will lose their jobs at Dan River, Incorporated (NYSE: DRF).
The clothing manufacturer announced it will transfer its work to its Danville, Virginia plant because of bad economy and foreign competition.
Nearly two years ago, on December 12, of 2001 as part of a plan to bring production in line with demand, Dan River Inc. closed its Newnan (near Atlanta, GA.) cut-and-sew facility.
The Newnan operation was relocated to sewing plants in Brookneal and Danville, VA. The move eliminated the fixed costs associated with the Newnan facility and improved process flow within the Danville-based textile company’s home fashions operations, according to a company official.
The company also announced it idled 140 looms in the company’s apparel fabrics operation and relocated 120 apparel fabrics looms from Danville to its Sevierville plant in 2001.
The Sevierville plant will begin releasing the employees sometime around January 9, and is moving the work to its plant in Virginia over the next two to three months.
