Sept. 10 – Two Seymour residents were shot and killed Thursday, September 4 in what police suspect was a murder/suicide.
At approximately 2:54 p.m. the Sevier County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call at 1152 Deer Trail Way in Seymour. The caller stated there had been a double shooting of a male and female.
Sheriff Montgomery advised that upon arrival by officers, including Sergeant Von Cannon who was the first on the scene, that two individuals, Jeffery Wayne Latham, age 44, and his wife, Sandra D. Latham, 43, were lying in the side yard of their home and that both were deceased. A witness stated that Jeffrey W. Latham shot his wife then shot himself.
The couple had two children, a sixteen-year-old daughter who lived with the couple, and a son in his early 20’s who lives next door. Reports stated that the couple had been married for 27 years. Sources told the Herald say that the daughter is currently staying with her brother.
Jeffrey Latham had been arrested in July of 2003 on a domestic abuse charge. Sevier County General Sessions Court records stated that Latham was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days probation along with five days of public service after he plead guilty to a domestic violence charge. According to sources, the couple had been in court that day in regards to that charge. His previous arrest was for a DUI in 1998.
Jeffrey Latham had been ordered to have no contact with the victim. Sources also told The Herald that Latham had come to the couple’s trailer to pick up some clothes when he asked his wife to step outside so that he could show her something, when he allegedly shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.
On the July call, Deputy Blaine Lewis with the Sevier County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Latham residence. There, Sandra and her teenage daughter stated that Jeffrey Latham had been drinking, was threatening and physical. Blaine reported that he noticed marks on both the victims’ arms.
Detective Mark Holt of the Sevier Count Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting.
