A three-car accident on Chapman Highway caused traffic backups in both directions for nearly one hour Sunday afternoon around 1:30 p.m.
According to eyewitness Chris Thomas of Knoxville, a KIA Sportage SUV was heading north on Chapman Highway when all of a sudden “she went clear across the road to the other side flipping two or three complete somersaults in between traffic.”
Connie Mathes and her granddaughter of Knoxville were in a 1993 Mercury heading back from a funeral when the KIA side-swiped her Mercury. “Luckily we are just shaken up,” stated Mathes.
Orville Hood and his wife were driving their Grand Prix when all of a sudden this car came at them. “I tried to miss the KIA but the only place I had to go was in this pond. There is no shoulder, I had no choice,” stated Hood.
Knoxville County Sheriff, Seymour Volunteer Fire Department and Knoxville Search and Rescue attended the scene.
