For the second year in a row, overhead expenses to operate the United Way of Sevier County will be covered through the generosity of the Alexis De Tocqueville Society.
“To date we have raised over $125,000, which is close to our goal of covering all operational expenses for 2004,” said United Way Chairwoman Margit Worsham. “We are confident that additional community members will join the Alexis De Tocqueville Society, which will enable all donations given in the 2004 United Way campaign to go directly to the 24 Sevier County agencies.”
Held on September 5, a close group of 20 community supporters attended the 2004 Alexis De Tocqueville dinner at the residence of Margit and Earl Worsham on Norton Creek, in Gatlinburg. This exclusive event included a catered dinner prepared by the Walter State Community College Culinary Competition Team. In addition, Dave Gorden served as Master of Ceremonies of the evening which included entertainment from Jim Clayton, a personal inspiration story by Courtney Elmore and presentations by United Way Chairwoman Margit Worsham and past United Way Chairman Earl Worsham.
The Alexis de Tocqueville Society was initiated in March 1984 by the United Way of America. This society is designed to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of individuals to United Ways and to recognize the deep commitment to service. United Way of America chose the name Alexis de Tocqueville when forming this special group of donors who contribute $10,000 or more to the annual campaign because of Tocqueville’s admiration of the spirit of voluntary association he discovered in America.
Currently there are over 350 local Tocqueville Societies in communities across the United States. Last year 352 societies raised over $422 million from over 19,500 individuals nationwide.
