Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, “Buried Child,” delves into the breakdown of the American family and the disintegration of the American dream on the CBT stage, Oct. 10 to 25. In an effort to bring out the musicality and jazz-like spontaneity in the
language of the play, CBT’s production will feature the compositions of internationally known jazz artist, Sirone, who is composing original music specifically for “Buried Child.”
Sirone, who performs his compositions on stage as part of each performance, was co-founder of the great Revolutionary Ensemble in the 70s and has also worked with many other masters of American classical cultural music including: John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Marion Brown, Pharaoh Sanders, Noah Howard and many others.
In this darkly humorous play, a once typical Midwestern family falls upon hard times when their prosperous farm fails. Despite emotional turmoil, the dysfunctional family is able to cope by hiding under a wholesome, hard working, God-fearing facade. Through dogged investigation, Shelly begins unraveling the family’s disturbing secret. As the play evolves, we are shown the convoluted world of fear, obsession, dishonesty and complicity that has been created by this once typical family in America’s heartland.
“Buried Child” previews Thursday, Oct. 9, followed by opening night Friday, Oct. 10. The show will run through Saturday, Oct. 25. The play contains mature subject matter. Ticket prices are $19 for preview, $35 opening night and $22 for all other performances. UT faculty/staff, senior citizens, children and students receive discounts. Tickets go on sale Sept. 26. Call the Clarence Brown Theatre box office at 974-5161 or Tickets Unlimited at 656-4444 to order tickets.
