This summer, a new crosswalk was installed downtown on Bruce Street, between Forks of the River Parkway and Court Avenue. This crosswalk is necessary due to the large numbers of pedestrians crossing Bruce Street, from the Sevier County Courthouse to the new Sevier County Sheriff’s Department offices, as well as several small stores and offices west of the SCSD offices.
There have been several complaints regarding vehicles that have not yielded to pedestrians in this crosswalk. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported. The Sevierville Police Department has been observing this area more closely.
SPD would like to remind drivers to exercise extra caution near all crosswalks. Pedestrians in crosswalks generally have the right of way. In addition, pedestrians should remember to follow pedestrian signals where available (“walk/don’t walk” signals), and to cross with traffic signals, where signals are present.
The City is investigating additional methods of increasing the safety of crosswalk areas, such as “Crosswalk Ahead” warnings and raised crosswalk areas.
