The Sevierville Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious case in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, 1414 Parkway, at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, September 17. A Wal-Mart employee noticed the case and called the SPD.
SPD Officer Bryan Lewelling responded and found a black plastic case, similar to a case used for electronic equipment such as a camcorder, in a shopping cart in the parking lot. A safety perimeter was established around the cart.
The Sevierville Fire Department, Sevier County Emergency Management Agency, and Sevier County Ambulance Service were on hand as a precautionary measure.
Sevier County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Joey Matthews was at the scene with his K-9, who has bomb detection training. The Knoxville Police Department Bomb Squad also responded and brought a remote control robot. After both agencies investigated, it was determined that the case was empty.
Law enforcement and emergency units cleared from the scene at about 10:45 p.m.
