Men have long been regarded as disinterested in seeking care or making decisions about their own health. Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center and Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse are meeting men on their own territory with HisHealth, a health fair for men designed to promote preventive care and healthy behavior.
HisHealth will be held Saturday, September 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse in Sevierville.
A lack of time and not having a pressing reason to see a doctor are two common excuses with which both men and women can identify. But, in general, men like going to the doctor as much as they like asking for directions. HisHealth was created to offer health care screenings and information in an environment convenient and familiar to men so that they might become more active in making health care decisions.
Past studies have shown that men wait until there’s a conspicuous health problem then take corrective steps. It’s less of a struggle to get women to see a doctor because women are conditioned more for the role of the caretaker and nurturer. In addition, men tend not to get the same attention or incentives to get annual tests and screenings as women do.
HisHealth will offer blood work on site. C-Reactive Protein tests will be available for $20, PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests will be available for $15, lipid panels (which measures cholesterol and triglycerides) will be available for $10 (fasting for 12 hours prior to testing is recommended for accurate lipid panel results). Free information and screenings will be available on eye safety, allergies, home safety, blood pressure, strength and proper lifting techniques.
