A new football program, anticipated to add some experience to the Lion’s varsity team in the near future, is beginning this season at King’s Academy. Twenty middle school players have been showing up for practice for the new middle school Lions football team. Parents and students have been asking for a team, and the coaches are excited about the new feeder system to their varsity.
Led by the Head Coach of the high school squad, Larry Watson, the eighth grade team is pretty excited about this opportunity. “We’re very encouraged by the kids’ attitudes so far through the summer warm-ups. We’re getting a few players that have played sandlot ball and that certainly helps.”
These potential future varsity Lions will be starting out with the basics of the game. The team is starting with the fundamentals such as proper techniques for blocking, tackling and running on both sides of the ball.
The first year schedule will be light with a few scrimmages and four games slated for September. The eighth grade team will be playing Eagleton, Alcoa and community neighbor Seymour Middle. The fourth game is still being scheduled, but is expected to be announced soon.
