Knoxville – Seymour played five games in five nights but for the first time in five years, the Eagles weren’t playing in the championship game Monday night. “The quarterbacks (in the league) were very sound and there was a whole lot of quickness among the receivers this year,” said Seymour Head Coach Gary Householder.
Oak Ridge (5-A), Heritage(5-A), Central(4-A), Union County(3-A), Rockwood (2-A), Catholic(Div II, 2-A), participated in the league this year at Division 2, host Webb. The flag football league focuses on the passing and kicking games.
Seymour opened against a strong Central squad that is expected to be the only true contender in Region 3 to upset state powerhouse Maryville. Central kept Seymour’s “Kentucky Spread” offense in check, allowing a long field goal as the only Eagles’ score of the first night.
SHS put up a solid performance against Catholic on Tuesday. A Caleb Moore flick over the middle to senior Scott Thomas produced a quick score. Aaron Lambert hauled in another scoring strike later in the half. Daniel Miles converted both PAT valued at three points each.
Wednesday and Thursday SHS played battles of turnovers. They defeated Union County the first night in a game where the fewest interceptions determined the game, and then lost to Webb. Moore drove the Eagles downfield for a score in about a minute and a half of game time to take the lead late against the Spartans. Webb then came right back and got their own game-winning score as the clock wound down. SHS had one more turnover in the game than the opponents.
The last game of the week matched Seymour against Heritage in a just cross the county line affair. Tight end William Rickles was the favorite target for both SHS quarterbacks. Will Lynam and Moore both connected on throws over the middle to the 6’1” senior. Anthony Serafine showcased his speed to break open deep and hauled one in for a long and quick scoring drive. Heritage answered and led by two. With no time to waste, SHS softened their defense to allow the quick score. The gamble worked as Heritage missed the extra point try. SHS took over needing a touchdown and then to convert the three point kick for a win. The Eagles drive fell short.
“We had a good week up here and got a much better idea where we need to work,” said Householder. “As for tonight (against Heritage), I’ll take any blame for that. We got a little anxious and quick on some play calling and really put Caleb and Will in some tough positions.”
Seymour begins summer practice on July 28 before opening up at county rival 5-A Sevier County High School on Saturday, August 23.
