It has become increasingly clear over the past several weeks the weapons our government claimed Iraq possessed are not there. That was the reason given by the Bush administration to initiate a war with Iraq in the beginning. Well, it seems that was just a lie. Because of Bush’s lust for Iraqi oil and, in part, revenge for what happened in 1991 when his father was president, American citizens, along with members of Congress, have been victimized by this lie. Tennessee’s own esteemed congressman, Jimmy Duncan, was one of the few conservative Republicans to vote against this rush to war. Duncan was not convinced Iraq owned the terrible weapons Bush said they had. And, of course, Mr. Duncan was correct.
Because Saddam is gone from Iraq and its people are now free to elect a new leader, it is time for American troops to withdraw and return home. Even though the actual war is over, our troops are in constant danger; in fact more than 40 soldiers have been killed or wounded since Bush declared the war “over.”
When will Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc. get it into their thick skulls that the Iraqi people no longer want us there? Our government cannot force a country with multiple religious factions to completely change their way of thinking about how they will be ruled. As has been reported numerous times by the media, there are pockets of resistance in Iraq and US soldiers are still being targeted. Terrorists continue to organize and cause havoc, and there are no signs that these activities will cease in the near future.
Americans should contact their legislators and demand they put pressure on the Bush administration to bring our troops home. There really is no sense in continuing to occupy a country that wants us out. I hope Mr. Bush realizes the blood of our soldiers is on his hands.
