Darrel Wayne Wilson, 44, of Oldham Creek Road in Sevierville, was charged this past weekend with animal cruelty in a case that has shocked animal lovers throughout the area. Wilson, who was being held at the Sevier County jail, has made bond in the amount of $1500 and has been released.
On Wednesday, June 4, the Sevier County Humane Society recovered the remains of six, 3-week-old puppies that appeared to have been stomped to death. The crime reportedly occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2003. The Sevier County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene. According to reports, charges were brought against Wilson based on the testimony made to police by his girlfriend, who told police that he allegedly committed the act as revenge in a spat he was having with her. A witness to the crime reportedly stated that there were a total of 8 puppies that were victimized. The six puppies that were recovered have been taken to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, for necropsy.
Under Tennessee state law, animal cruelty is a Class A misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of 11 months 29 days in jail, and a $2500.00 fine. A second offense of aggravated cruelty in Tennessee is a felony.
In a press release to the media, the Sevier County Humane Society denounced the crime as a “cowardly, brutal act committed against defenseless animals.” The release also cited studies that have shown a conclusive connection between individuals that commit heinous acts against animals that go on to victimize people.
