Nevada Barr has set her new mystery in the Dry Tortugas National Park in the Florida Keys. The setting is an old civil war fort that was once used to house conspirators from the Lincoln conspiracy, including Dr. Mudd who treated John Wilkes Booth for his broken leg and Booth’s brother. Anna Pigeon is again the heroine. She receives a stack of letters that were written by her great-great aunt who is the wife of the captain who ran the fort at the time of the incarceration. A missing woman, a man seeing ghosts, a mysterious boat explosion are some of the hooks used to draw us in to a story that has many twists and turns. The letters alone are intriguing enough to make you want to finish the book if you are interested in the Civil War or journals and letters from the past.
