If the executives at Disney ever saw him, A.L. Savage would be in a summer movie as the unsung hero. Shy and humble to a fault, A.L. had to be coerced by The King’s Academy Athletic Director, Dan Kirkpatrick, into attending the East Tennessee Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame awards luncheon to receive the George L. Hunter Distinguished Community Service Award on Saturday.
A.L.’s easygoing style made him a perfect choice, as he coaches the T.K.A. middle school golf team. According to Kirkpatrick, “He’s the reason we started a middle school program.”
Savage puts his energy into his kids, deflecting most questions into talking about their progress and how they are doing: “Don’t write about me, write about them.” But it’s hard to ignore his efforts. He’s arranged for his “kids” to get lessons and finds clubs for them to use, giving them rides where they need to go, and all as behind-the-scenes as he can be.
He takes his energy from helping the students and giving them an opportunity to succeed.
Kirkpatrick describes Savage’s contributions, “A.L.’s fulfillment in life has really come through how he touches a kid’s life. I have seen 1 Corinthians 13 lived out through A.L … he does this with love in his heart.”
A.L. Savage was one of the six community service honorees recognized this year by the chapter. He is currently working with his team to prepare for their district tournament April 28th at Bent Creek.
