The National Taxpayers Union (NTU) has awarded Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-TN) its annual “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” for the year 2002. The award is given to those Members who have consistently voted to reduce taxpayer burden.
Congressman Duncan ranked 5th among the 435 Members of the House of Representatives and the only House Member in the Tennessee delegation to be recognized with the highest rating by the National Taxpayers Union.
The rating, which since 1978 has been based on every roll call vote affecting fiscal policy, assigns a “Taxpayer Score” to each Member of Congress that indicates his or her support for reducing or controlling federal spending, taxes, debt, and regulation.
“If every Member of Congress had voted as responsibly as Representative Duncan did in 2002, Americans could enjoy much lower taxes and less waste in government. Overburdened taxpayers in the 2nd District of Tennessee and across the Nation owe Mr. Duncan a debt of gratitude for his hard work on their behalf,” John Bertoud, president of the NTU said. “While many Members of Congress talk about reducing the size of government, Congressman Duncan backed up those words with votes. This Award proves that he is a consistent and effective ally in our battle to restore fiscal responsibility to Washington.”
The NTU is a non-profit, non-partisan citizen organization founded in 1969 to work for lower taxes, less wasteful spending, and accountable government at all levels. Congressman Duncan has received the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” 14 of his 15 years as a Member of the House of Representatives.
The award will be presented to Congressman Duncan at a ceremony on May 7, 2003, at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington.
