Three senior 4-H members were among 56 teens from across Tennessee who recently took part and graduated from the PrudentialYouth Leadership Institute (PYLI). Amanda Hansen, Kandra McCarter and Sara Stephens, students at Gatlinburg Pittman High School, were selected to participate based on their potential as youth leaders. Prudential Youth Leadership Institute is an innovative program that provides young people with the leadership and community service skills to play active roles in improving the quality of life in their local communities.
This session of PYLI was a joint effort by the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service, the Prudential Insurance Company of America, and The Points of Light Foundation. Participants received the caliber of leadership training that is typically available only to corporate executives and government leaders.
The 4-H’ers participated in specially designed curriculum developed by the Center for Creative Leadership of Greensboro, NC, one of the world’s foremost authorities on leadership training. The 30 hours of classroom instruction focused on community analysis, goal setting, team building, project planning, decision-making, and leadership dynamics.
The training was sponsored by 4-H Seeds of Service, a statewide service-learning initiative funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Commission on National and Community Service.
