Homeowners can follow a few simple guidelines to mowing properly. The most common mistake is mowing lawns too short. For most lawns in East TN, a mowing height of 2-3 inches is recommended. The mowing height can be a little shorter at the beginning of the mowing season, as the grass is growing rapidly, but should be mowed at the higher setting as the heat of summer approaches and the growth slows. Lawns mowed higher retain more water, stay greener, and are less susceptible to weed intrusions.
Frequent mowing is essential. As a general rule-of-thumb, no more than one third of the grass blade should be cut. The smaller, nitrogen enriched clippings are returned to the soil, and will not create thatch.
Blades should be sharpened on a regular basis. This creates less stress for the grass, and is much healthier than the ripping effect caused by dull blades. A mower with sharp blades discharges grass in a more even pattern rather than erratic clumps of grass. Mowing can be done at a faster speed, and tougher vegetation such as crabgrass and wild onions are cut easier.
Avoid mowing wet grass. The grass will stick to the underside of the mowing deck and will not allow the grass to be properly discharged.
