Don’t let the size of these small heroes fool you, they are providing a very important part of a soldier’s everyday needs. Most of them don’t have anyone that they know over in Kuwait, or Afghanistan, but it doesn’t matter to them, they still want to help our troops who are preparing to keep our way of life a reality.
Amy Humble’s second grade class at Seymour Primary School got a special request from their very popular teacher. Ms. Humble knows a young Marine, David Crystal, from Maryville that is stationed in Kuwait. When David first wrote home, he asked for things that we take for granted, such as potato chips, snacks and things like that. When he wrote his second letter home, he asked his parents to send lip balm. He indicated that the weather in Kuwait is very hot and dry, and that the platoon he is stationed with had already used up their supply. Ms. Humble decided to enlist not only her small church, but thought her students would enjoy collecting this important item, and she also enlisted four other teachers to help. Ms. Humble indicated that the other teachers had not turned in their portion yet, but thought that they had collected over 100 sticks. Her goal was to get at least one stick each for the 300-man platoon.
The other teachers involved have had students step forward too. Ms. Mynatt, Ms. McCroskey and Ms. Magouirk gave the challenge to the students and several have turned in the request. With the help of Walgreen’s, Tanner Blake turned in 24 sticks to Ms. Humble.
“Walgreen’s had a coupon,” said Tanner, “So my Grandma and Grandpa took me there every day to buy some, you could only buy six a day.”
“I turned in eighteen,” added Victor O’Rourke.
Other students that have brought the slippery lip saver to school are Sam Myres, who brought in ten, Zach Wilkerson with five and Abby Herring brought in three.
It doesn’t seem to matter to these kids how small the help may seem, they came forward to help in a way that maybe no one else thought about. The lip balm is small and easy to send to the troops, and as young heroes they have proved again that it’s not how big you are, or how big the package is, great things come in small packages!
