Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith announced a current Knoxville Police Department Lieutenant along with a retired KPD Specialist have been called to Texas to help with the recovery of the victims from the fatal Columbia shuttle mission.
Lt. Steve Tinder, along with retired Specialist Art Bohanan were summoned to Texas due to their expertise in victim recoveries. Both individuals belong to a specialized team known as DMORT. The Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT) is comprised of specially-trained individuals that respond to catastrophic events involving loss of life.
Chief Keith said the team was activated due to their level of training and experience from previous missions.
“Lt. Tinder and Art Bohanan have responded to tragic incidents around the world. Their experience includes victim recoveries from a plane crash in Korea to recovery efforts after the World Trade Center disaster in 2001,” said Chief Keith.
The DMORT team will continue to work in the Texas area until their mission has been completed and NASA releases them to return to Knoxville.
