Collectors of antique and period jewelry now have a full color guide to identify and price their pieces from the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. “Warman’s Jewelry, 3rd Edition” catalogs more than 1,000 fine and costume jewelry pieces. Detailed descriptions, up-to-date pricing and valuable background information accompany the listings.
Collectors will also learn the age, origin of manufacture and how the piece was made. Published by Krause Publications and written by Christie Romero, this new third edition is a completely updated and expanded guide, useful for beginners to experts.
“Warman’s® Jewelry, 3rd Edition” covers more than just American-made pieces. Jewelry categories include Late Georgian; Early, Mid and Late Victorian; American Arts & Crafts; Art Nouveau; Edwardian; Beaux-arts; Neo-Renaissance; 20th Century Fine; Costume, Plastic and Novelty; Mid-century American Modernist; as well as Native American, Mexican and Scandinavian.
Another new feature is the inclusion of the manufacturer’s mark, which is featured with the photographed jewelry wherever possible. Helpful appendices offer basic hallmark identification and illustrate and list marks on metals, manufacturer’s marks and designer’s marks. Romero writes, “The best defense against the vagaries of the marketplace … is to arm oneself with information. A number of ways to do that are available today. This book is one of them.”
Romero is a historian of antique, period and vintage jewelry, as well as a certified gemologist, lecturer, instructor, consultant and collector. She is also the director of the Center for Jewelry Studies. Romero has participated as an appraiser of antique and period jewelry on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow.
“Warman’s® Jewelry, 3rd Edition” can be purchased from major bookstores or contact Krause Publications at (800) 258-0929, or visit online at www.krausebooks.com.
