Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe and Police Chief Phil Keith announced the results of the successful New Year’s Holiday Enforcement effort.
Chief Keith said officers issued 1352 citations during the 32-hour enforcement period. Officers also arrested 113 individuals on traffic related charges. Five of the arrests were for Driving Under the Influence.
The specialized enforcement effort started at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 and concluded at Midnight on January 1, 2003.
Officers worked 40 accidents with only 2 resulting in injuries. No fatalities were recorded during the holiday enforcement period.
Mayor Ashe said, “The success of the holiday enforcement effort is due to the dedication and commitment of the officers on the street. They are commended on a job well done.”
The special enforcement effort this year only covered 32 hours compared to 104 hours in the 2001-2002 New Year’s Enforcement reporting period.
During the 2001-2002 New Year’s Enforcement effort, 2968 traffic related citations were issued. Officers also arrested 232 individuals with 17 of those being DUI related. More than 130 traffic crashes occurred with 20 resulting in injuries.
Chief Keith said, “The officers did an outstanding job of reducing the speed of motorists throughout the specialized holiday reporting period. Even with an increase in the normal calls for service, the officers continued to target individuals speeding, driving recklessly or driving while impaired.”
“The success of this traffic enforcement effort demonstrates our officer’s desire to make the streets of Knoxville safe for all citizens,” the Chief concluded.
