It’s time for your bath, you get ready to climb in, and you think to yourself, “Boy, do we need a new tub!” But you don’t have the time to rip your bathroom apart to get it. Now there is an answer. Just ask “The Tub Man.”
Barry Johnson, who started his business a little over a month ago, said that this is an exciting new opportunity available to people in the area. No longer will you be forced to rip out walls to replace an old rusty bathtub. Now, according to Johnson, you can just “resurface it.”
“I’ve been working with homeowners mainly so far, they have been my main customers, but I’d like to start doing some commercial work as well working with real estate agents and contractors,” says Johnson.
Johnson also stated, “When you go into the older tubs with rust and chips, hairline cracks, I can make them look brand new. It’s a process of stripping the surface then I reface the whole thing. It works on fiberglass, plastic, metal, and just about any kitchen appliance.”
One of the advantages to resurfacing as opposed to replacing is the cost. “A complete bathroom restoration, which would include a new tub, tile, flooring, etc. runs around $7500. In most cases you have to rip the whole wall out to get the bathtub out,” said Johnson. But I can resurface a complete bathroom with tub and tile for around $1000 while the basic cost of a refurbishing a tub runs around $300.”
Johnson lives in Seymour with his wife Kendra, who helps with the prep work and their six children all of whom attend Seymour schools. “We’re a family owned business – we work together,” said Johnson.
Before becoming a business owner Johnson worked as a machinist for fourteen years. Recently laid off, he decided to venture out on his own. He also is the owner of Arrowhead Lawn Care. His partner in the resurfacing business is Chris Blair and to get their business off the ground, Johnson is offering $100 off the total price of a shower and tub restoration. Some examples given of items that can be “brought back to life” include Porcelain sinks and tubs, counter tops, ceramic tile, kitchen appliances, fiberglass tubs and showers, cultured marble sinks, and metal shelves and file cabinets. Johnson adds that his work is environmentally safe, very durable…often better than the original, comes with a warranty and an unlimited color palette to choose from.
Seymour resident Debbie Mason is one local who decided to give the process a go. “It was wonderful. I would not have believed it. My bathrooms were avocado and gold in color and it really dated the house. Both bathrooms had tile. Now they are white and look brand new. I couldn’t be happier with it. I was really amazed it could be done. If I tried to take the entire tile and everything out it would have been pretty expensive. It saved me not only money but also time.”
