On Dec 5 & 6 a group of 55 travelers visited Nashville, TN on the final trip of the season for the Fort Sanders Sevier Senior Center Travel Program. On the first day the group visited a Fantasy in Ice exhibit, saw the famed Radio City Music Hall ROCKETTES at the Opry Theater and enjoyed a meal at the Hermitage Smorgasbord.
The ice sculptures were exhibited in a large exhibit area at the Gas Light Theater in an atmosphere that was held to 5 degrees F. All visitors were issued insulated parkas for the tour. These ice sculptures which included traditional Christmas scenes, an ice slide, a foot-bridge, a 20 ft carved angel and a split rail fence (plus many more) were created by a group of 40 artists from China working for one month.
The ROCKETTES show was a delight to anyone who enjoys precision movement. Performers ranged from Rag Dolls, to stuffed bears, to scenes from the Nutcracker to the Can-can and many more. Of course the show-stopper was when the Dancing Chorus does their famous Chorus Line kick routine. The precision they exhibit would make any military close order drill team envious (and the girls were much better looking).
It is almost impossible to describe the decorations viewed the second day at
The Opryland Hotel. On display were more flowers and plants of every size and description than you can imagine. Decorations ranged from Santa’s Workshop, to eight-foot diameter ‘hot air balloons’ decorated as tree ornaments with gondolas filled with gift packages, to giant candy canes and just about everything between.
The afternoon at Opry Mills Mall gave everyone an opportunity to catch up on
that last minute shopping and one of the luggage storage holds on the motor coach was reserved for shopping bags, all labeled with the shoppers names.
This was the final excursion this year for the Smoky Mountain Travelers. Already travel coordinators Faye and ‘Moe’ Greenwood of Seymour are working on a schedule for next year. This schedule should be available by mid-February at the new Fort Sanders Sevier Senior Center on Chapman Highway at the west edge of Sevierville.
All area retirees and seniors are encouraged to join this group for travel during the coming months. There is no membership charge. By making timely reservations and paying the economical trip cost, you can join this group of folks who have decided to use their time to ‘go somewhere and do something’.
