Jerry Hurst resides in the Dupont Community and had trouble getting his household garbage picked up or to the refuse site, because he didn’t have a pickup or in many cases, the time.
So when a guy came around in a pickup with side stakes and offered garbage service for $20 per month, he jumped at the offer. The person took one load and was never seen again.
“There is a garbage truck that’s been for sale for awhile, and every time I drove by it, I thought to myself that I could use that to provide service to others in Seymour,” said Hurst.
“I think people are most upset about the fact that when they do get the time to go to the dump, it’s most often closed or full,” stated Hurst.
Hurst said he talked to the operator of the Landfill – who suggested that Hurst charge $10 per month for once a week pick up. “I believe BFI gets $17 for bi-weekly pickup,” Hurst said. He said he contacted others about EPA concerns, used oil, paint, etc. and determined that the only garbage he would pick up would be regular household garbage.
About two weeks ago, Hurst began putting signs out that stated: I Need 500 Customers to start the Seymour Garbage Service and would pick up the garbage. “I really couldn’t afford to get the signs made, so I decided to make my own. They turned out pretty good.”
“I don’t know why someone has not already done it, because there is a large concentration of people around here. There are over 38,000 people that live in the Seymour area and it’s about time that it had its own garbage service. I started handing out flyers in Cherokee sub-division and got rid of 500 like nothing. And that’s just one sub-division.”
Hurst’s plan is to start his route around the first of the year if he gets 500 customers. “The way the phone is ringing off the hook, I’m going to have just enough to start on the first.”
“I use to be in construction and could always go back to that, but I always felt that owning your own business is better than working at a job.” Hurst feels this business creates two things. It creates money for him and an affordable service for customers.
If you are time constrained or don’t have the right vehicle to do the job, you might consider calling Seymour Garbage Service to solve those problems for you.
Hurst says all they need is a couple 30-gallon garbage cans – like the ones available at Wal-Mart. Seymour Garbage Service only plans to service residential accounts in the Seymour area at the present time.
“I’ll go to areas no one else would go – like up in the hollows. I’m getting a garbage compacter truck – one of those flat nose Ford trucks. You’ll see me running up and down all the streets and sub-divisions in Seymour.”
“I was born in Pensacola, Florida and came up to Seymour in 1989 when work was hard to find in Florida. I love it here; I just want to be able to go somewhere else every so often.”
If you are interested in getting more information or signing up for the curbside service, contact Seymour Garbage Service at 428-5872.
“I’ve done the research, talked to the landfills and EPA, and SGS will not be accepting anything other than household garbage. There are places where you can dump your old used oil.
“I’m going to be keeping you from throwing garbage in your car and saving you time,” concluded Hurst.
