Seymour High School hosted a pre-season basketball jamboree last week with proceeds going to help Seymour Assistant Basketball Coach Dennis Berrier, who is waging an ongoing battle with cancer.
According to Seymour High School Principal Bruce Wilson, who helped organize the event that featured eight area teams including the two Seymour squads, the first time pre-season exhibition was a success.
“Everything went very well,” said Wilson. “We had about 350 fans attend and all of the teams had a chance to see how they look against other competition before the actual season gets started”.
There were four games scheduled, each consisting of one eight-minute quarter. After the first two games were completed, a slam-dunk contest and a three-point shooting contest took place.
In the first game, the Pigeon Forge Lady Tigers outscored Cocke County 7-5. The Cocke County boys returned the favor in the following game, defeating the Tigers 14-6.
The Gatlinburg-Pittman girls knocked off the King’s Academy Lady Lions in the third game of the evening 10-1. The Lions looked impressive in the boy’s game, slipping by the Highlanders 12-10 on a last second lay-up.
The slam dunk contest was won by Daniel Singleton from Cocke County. Allen Dewyse of G-P won the three-point competition for the boys and Tori Wooodward of G-P won it for the girls.
The defending state champion Sevier County Lady Bearettes downed the Rutledge Lady Pioneers 27-8 in the next game. Rutledge knocked off the Bears 14-11 in the boy’s game that followed.
The Seymour girls got playing time for every player on their bench in a 10-7 win over Cosby and the Cosby boys pulled off the shocker of the night by surprising the Eagles 13-9 in the last game of the evening.
