Last Monday, State Department of Transportation (TDEC) representatives presented a plan of action to clean up a contaminated landfill in the Burnett Creek, south Knoxville area. The area has been an ongoing problem for residents.
TDEC met with a group (community task force) to try to get a better idea about their concerns. TDEC’s goal is to try to find out where the toxins are coming from.
According to a story by WATE, Mike Apple, with TDEC solid waste management stated, “we need to do some ground water monitoring and ground water evaluation to see if the contamination is not coming from the Reagan site or where it is coming from. Anything and everything could be contributing to the water problems up here.”
The meeting held at Burnett’s Creek Baptist Church brought many residents looking for answers. One resident stated, “We have been drinking bottled water for so long now. It just isn’t right to have to live with fear of your own drinking water. Our property values have diminished and many of us are at our wits end.”
