The Division IIA East Region Golf Tournament is usually one of the most competitive in the state, and this years’ competition at Three Ridges Golf Course in Knoxville on October 7th was no exception.
The King’s Academy sent senior Jenny Kim and junior Matt King to the tournament and both had successful outings, finishing runner’s up in their respective divisions to earn a berth in the state tournament this week in Pickwick, Tenn.
What made the two Lions’ golfers accomplishment even more impressive was the competition that they were up against.
In the boys group, Baylor School, Knoxville Catholic, McCallie School, Notre Dame and Webb School each sent five players to the tournament. The King’s Academy’s lone representative was King, who shot a 69 to finish second behind Luke List of Baylor, who shot a 67. List is considered to be among the top few high school golfers in the country by most sources.
The top three boys scores were: List 67, King 69, Seth Brandon (Baylor) 70, Austin Hayes (McCallie) 71 and Bryce Ledford (McCallie) 71.
Jenny Kim finished with a 73, one shot behind Catherine Hicks of Baylor, who shot a 72.
King, who is a native of Korea, has only been playing competitive golf for a little over a year and has been stepping up her game at every step of the way.
“I can’t say enough about how proud I am that these two young athletes will be representing our school,” said The King’s Academy Athletic Director Dan Kirkpatrick. “Not only are they great athletes but they’re both even better kids. They know the competition will get tougher this week in the state, but they’ll probably handle it better being out there on the course than I will just watching it. There are some very tense moments when the competition gets this good, but it will be a lot of fun for all of us, especially for Jenny and Matt.
