Maryville College will unlock its doors – and secrets of the college search – during its Open House for prospective students, their parents and family members on Sat., Oct. 5.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Wilson Chapel on the college campus. The Open House will begin at 9 a.m. with a welcome and general introduction to the College. Immediately following the welcome session, participants will be divided into two large groups in order to focus on particular interests and questions of the guests. The day’s itinerary includes campus tours, sessions explaining the academic program at Maryville College, separate group discussions for parents and students, a picnic lunch and a Maryville College Fighting Scots football game.
Rick Ziegler, Maryville College vice president and dean for enrollment, explained why it’s important for prospective students to make plans to attend the Open House.
“It is a great opportunity for students to get a sense of Maryville College’s programs and people,” he said. “It also gives prospective students a chance to participate in an active day at Maryville College.”
Members of the College’s Student Foundation will lead the campus tours. While on the tours, attendees can expect to hear information on the College’s history, current campus rules and the opportunities for involvement, leadership and personal growth through extracurricular activities. Led by a professor from each of the College’s seven academic divisions, the academic program sessions will give students and family members information about each major offered at the College. A presentation on the College’s general education curriculum will also be included in the academic program sessions. After each group has had a chance to learn about academics and the campus, the parents and students will separate for sessions tailored to their interests. Information about the admi sion process, financial aid, scholarships, academic life and student life will be the topics of conversation at the parent session. Prospective students will have an opportunity to talk with current Maryville College students about campus life.
Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. on the lawn outside of Pearsons Hall. Lunch tickets will be available for purchase ($3 each) at the registration table. Later in the day, the Maryville Scots football team will take on Millsaps College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Honaker Field. The MC Campus Bookstore will also be open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Oct. 5. All Open House participants will receive a 10-percent discount to the bookstore. While there is no charge for Open House, reservations are required and may be made by calling 865-981-8092 or 1-800-59-SCOTS, or by e-mailing the Admissions Office at admissions@maryvillecollege.edu.
Other Open House dates scheduled for the 2002-2003 school year are Nov. 9, Nov. 16 (for transfers), Dec. 16 (for homeschoolers) and Feb. 1.
