Wesgate Resorts in conjunction with The Great Smoky Mountain Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Memorial Service at Music Mansion last Wednesday evening to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001. Gatlinburg Police Officer Sharon Atchley played “Taps.” “I’ve played at the Memorial Wall and other events. Basically, wherever they need me” said Atchley.
The Blackwood Quartet from the Louise Mandrell Theater sang along with Elvis impersonator Greg Johnson from Oldies Showplace Dinner Theater.
A message of hope was given by Pat Gartland, US Chamber of Commerce Regional Director along with a few words by Chamber President Annette Farmer. Seymour Primary School cheerleaders passed out flag stickers and flags to participants. Wesgate owners Jeff and Linda Turner attended the event. “It was a good memorial, 9-11 needs to be remembered,” stated Jeff Turner.
Pigeon Forge Police Chief Jack Baldwin also attended the event. “I was really happy with the turnout,” stated Farmer. “Chris Smith and Sophia Perez of Wesgate Resorts worked so hard to put this event together and they did a wonderful job. It was nice to see people coming out to remember. There were even people standing in the parking lot at Alabama Grill next door, just watching and remembering.”
The event at the Music Mansion was just one of many remembrances held across the area last Wednesday.
