The heroes that most racing fans admire are guys like Rusty Wallace and Jeff Gordon. But on Saturday night, in the hills of Tennessee, a group of unlikely heroes were honored. As part of the pre-race ceremonies, New York Fire Department personnel were on hand to accept praise and accolades that they would not even ask for. The true heroes were those gentlemen and ladies who, as people were running in the opposite direction, out of the towers in New York, these brave people were running in to the face of danger. They risked their lives readily for their fellow man.
NASCAR drivers and officials alike were honestly humbled and honored to be meeting with these fine people. Their demeanor and look of pride made the fans stand and cheer. The sport, which is as American as they come, realized it was not only good business but also worthwhile to make the effort to have these members of the fire departments on hand. They were, of course, in awe of the drivers, but many fans, myself included, felt we were seeing the heroes that keep America great right before our eyes.
